What Is Formula E and How Does It Work?

Formula E is the first international racing series that features single-seater electric race cars. The first race took place in. Its purpose is to showcase electric vehicle technology and the end goal is to promote sustainable mobility. Today, Formula E features 12 teams in each championship, with two drivers per team competing at a time. The drivers represent a variety of automotive manufacturers and teams.

How does the Formula E race format work?

Every race has two free 30-minute practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. The first round of qualifying is the Group Stage, where the drivers are divided into two groups based on odd or even rankings.

The fastest four drivers from each group go on to the Duels Round. Drivers from the groups are further divided into pairs who try to make it to the Semi-finals.

In the Finals, the two drivers left compete, and the driver who sets the fastest lap earns the pole position. The runner-up takes second place, and the semi-finalists who were eliminated take third and fourth positions according to their individual times.

The goal is to complete the season with the most points. The teams and drivers score points according to their finish in a race. The structure of the championship is much the same as other motorsport championships like Formula 1, with the main difference being the car specifications.

Sports bettors in states such as Michigan enjoy betting on motorsport competitions. At Gun Lake online sportsbook, gamblers can legally place many different types of motorsports bets. One of these bets is an outright bet on which driver will win.

How do Formula E cars work?

A Formula E car uses a battery pack to supply the power. The inverter converts the electricity the battery supplies from direct current to an alternating current charge. The motor uses this power to drive the transmission. The transmission transfers the energy the engine generates to the wheels.

The electric motor not only powers the transmission but also houses a regenerative braking mechanism. Applying the brakes slows the car down and converts kinetic energy into electricity, which recharges the battery. The inverter also plays a role in this by reconverting the AC charge to DC.

Gen 3 Formula E cars use all-weather Hankook tires. They perform well in dry and wet conditions, but their performance degrades over time. The age of tires can significantly impact grip and performance. Formula E doesn’t have pit stops for tire changes like Formula 1. Teams must rely on tire management to get the most out of their tires.

How fast are Formula E cars?

In 2014, the maximum speed of cars was 140 m/h. Today, they are much more powerful. The Gen3 racers have 350 kW of power, and the fastest cars can reach a speed of 200 m/h. Formula 1 cars are faster, but the speed of Formula E cars is improving all the time.

Formula E cars also feature impressive acceleration and can reach 60 m/h in 2.8 seconds. Formula 1 cars can do this in 2.6 seconds so the gap isn’t a big one to close.

One of the challenges of Formula E is the weight of the cars due to the heavy battery packs. Formula E cars currently weigh in at about 2k pounds. The battery is about a third of the total weight of the car.

What is the attack mode in Formula E?

Attack Mode in Formula E is a way for a racer to gain more speed for takeover maneuvers. Every circuit has an Attack Mode zone. In this zone, racers can temporarily boost their power by 50kW. To do so, they press a button on the steering wheel. The rules that govern attack mode are different from circuit to circuit and can be pretty strict.

How long is the Formula E race?

In seasons prior to 2023, the length of the race was 45 minutes. In that time, drivers would complete between 33 to 46 laps. Since 2023, Formula E race length depends on how much time it takes competitors to complete 33 laps. Each lap is about two to four kilometers.
