How Satellite Internet Is Great for Keeping You Connected On the Road

Whether you’re going on a tour or a work trip, having internet access makes traveling easier. You can jam to your playlist, find the nearest gas stations, and navigate without any hassle.

The internet can really be helpful, but you can’t depend on regular car Wi-Fi. Instead, satellite internet can come in really handy.

Here is how it empowers your adventure:

    1.     Keeps You Connected

A regular car Wi-Fi just acts as a router. It uses data connection from available hotspots (from cell phones) and provides Wi-Fi access to the passengers. However, its strength depends upon the hotspot.

That’s where satellite internet comes into play. The most prominent advantage of a satellite internet plan is that you can access the internet wherever you go. It is available everywhere, keeping you connected in every nook and cranny.

On the contrary, other connection types fail to deliver mass-scale connectivity. And since you’re not stationary on the road, an access point connection will also fail and mobile hotspots will be of no good if they’re out of coverage.

    2.     Provides Enhanced Connectivity for FMS

It’s not just about cars – delivery vans, RVs, etc., can benefit from satellite internet too. With on-the-go connectivity, such vehicles can easily communicate and operate on-board systems. RVs and cargo trailers carry fleet management systems or FMS, which operate in real-time.

These systems are connected to centralized databases back at the operations. Drivers and operators can easily monitor and communicate during the journeys. This also includes relaying important information, such as an updated delivery address, route details, or weather updates in real-time.

If you’ve booked a ride, you can easily get updates on the ride, such as route details, or share the ride with real-time GPS access with your friends and family. In other words, satellite internet is favorable for business-related activities where the traveler needs to stay connected all the time.

    3.     Ensures Increased Safety

Another reason why having internet while you’re on the road is to stay connected with your friends and family or with emergency services. In that case, having a satellite internet connection is a great choice since it’s dependable and keeps you connected.

Moreover, trucking companies can track the driver’s experience i.e., speed, health of the driver, maintenance checkup, etc. Any issue occurring during the route can trigger an alarm on the database. Once it occurs, the company can easily track the truck, sending backup as needed.

    4.     Allows IoT Connectivity in the Car

Smart cars come with enhanced ‘automotive software,’ a collection of systems that monitors the car’s performance in terms of engine condition, transmission, safety controls, etc.

Here, the internet may not be as useful to the user since any issue that arises will show up on the console in front of the driver. However, it serves the purpose when the user is away or when the car company wants to track the condition of the car.

From battery fuel levels to tire pressure and fuel consumption, the sensors pick up the data from the vehicle and relay it to the centralized system. The driver can check these on their smartphone via the connected app.

The trucking company can provide details of the trip and can ask the driver to bring the vehicle for checks and service. The company can also alert the user if the car is malfunctioning.

    Drawbacks of Using Satellite Internet

While satellite internet is great for remote connectivity, especially when you’re traveling, it has some potential downsides you should consider:

    Limited Data

Only a few satellite internet providers offer unlimited data with their plans. Even with no data caps, the speed is subpar. Since you’re using it on the go, it can fluctuate, causing disconnection and poor speed.

    Weather Issue

A satellite internet is somewhat similar to an access point internet; it needs a clear line of sight from the satellite to the receiver. Therefore, poor weather conditions can impact its connectivity.

    Expensive Plans

Using satellite internet can be a bit expensive. As highlighted earlier, not all providers have plans with unlimited data, which means if your data ends, you’d need to add more at additional rates. Hence, you need to meter/ limit the connection so that your data doesn’t expire.

Overall, Satellite Internet offers a lifeline when all else fails. It allows you to stay online and on track while traveling!
